By their sheer size and original shapes, baobabs are among the most remarkable trees on the planet. Relatively unknown in Madagascar, these giants are currently threatened by deforestation. To study them, in the heart of their forests, Cyrille Cornu and Wilfried Ramahafaly travel by pirogue, exploring 400 km of wild and isolated coastline in the south-west of Madagascar.

For the last 6 years, he has focused on the baobabs of Madagascar, and has become one of the world’s leading specialists. Each year, he organizes unique expeditions that use local traditional transport to access the heart of isolated forests that are home to the baobabs.

The island of Madagascar is a great source of inspiration for filmmakers and photographers. It is unique in many ways. Its biodiversity and landscapes are exceptional, and the social diversity is remarkable. Cyrille has been a keen photographer for many years but with “Baobabs between Earth and Sea”, his first documentary film, he has evolved to another level. The desire to share his adventures is at the heart of his approach to filming, sharing his travels through the nature and the encounters with the people living in wild regions.

The story of his first film is intimately related to traveling. Content and form are changing to the rhythm of different discoveries, a desire to place the viewer at the very heart of the voyage.

21.00 val. What Are The Wolves Howling About?

Apie ką staugia vilkai?
Rež. Inesa Kurklietytė

LITHUANIA – LIETUVA
Dokumentinis, trukmė: 57:00

It is a story about uncompleted last movie of a well known cameraman and director Petras Abukevicius. In the personal cinematograph’s archive remained a footage of the shooting team’s working commonness, communication attitudes and the wolf’s lives. Moreover, the conversations of the director reveal his own attitude.
In 1995-1996, cinematic operator and film director, Petras Abukevičius, made his last film – life story of the wolves. Cinematic team lived with wolves for two years, observing them day and night, reacting to every wiggling “of forest brothers”. Although established in different sides of the yard, they became the members of one cinematic pack.
In the personal archive of the cinematographer, filmed material survived from which the film director, being struck by the disease, wasn’t able to arrange the film. Observing the material, the peculiarities of wolves’ lives became clearer, their communicative features, also there unfold the habits of animal behaviour.
In the aviary of the territory of one hectare, there were six wolves, brought from various zoos, accommodated. They were observed for some time on purpose of looking for the most suitable “artists”. After selection, in the aviary a formed couple was left and other wolves were returned to the zoo. In the filmed material, we observe the interrelations of the wolves, the choice of the couple, hunting, as well as birth of the wolf babies, their breeding, care and surveillance.

Director: Inesa Kurklietytė

Since the beginning of modern cinema, viewers and critics alike have been transfixed by light contrasted with darkness. This interplay of light and dark was typical of film noir, a metaphor of good and evil in plots that featured crime, detectives, and mystery. We celebrate this genre through a salute to Augustin-Jean Fresnel, the inventor of a lens for lighthouses that was later used for movie and theatre lighting. Light Years features serial murder and a star-studded group of suspects over a half-century of film. Whodunnit? Ultimately, we learn that the Fatal Fresnel Lens has incinerated five cameras that recorded their own demise.
